Few cities have reshaped popular music as many times as Detroit. Berry Gordy Jr. founded Motown Records here in 1959, launching Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and The Temptations into global consciousness. A decade later, MC5 and Iggy and the Stooges were laying the groundwork for punk rock, and by the early 1980s, Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson were developing techno music from studios near Eastern Market. That restless inventiveness carries through into the live scene today. Baker's Keyboard Lounge, open since 1933, remains the city's anchor for jazz, while the Fox Theatre, a grand 5,048-seat house that hosted Elvis Presley for three nights in 1956, continues drawing major acts. For something closer to the ground, PJ's Lager House in Corktown and the basement venue The Shelter offer the kind of unfiltered, room-first experience that has always defined Detroit at its best.
