A university city with deep roots in polyphonic music and a current scene anchored by Het Depot, Leuven punches well above its size as a live music destination. The Alamire Foundation, based at Park Abbey in the city's Heverlee district, has made Leuven a serious centre for medieval music research, and its annual Voices of Passion festival brings that history into performance. On the contemporary side, Het Depot hosts up to 960 people and has launched careers including that of Selah Sue, who grew up in Leuven, while STUK, 30CC, and Rock Café Leuven cover everything from alternative acts to the city's annual jazz festival. Rumba and Co, operating since 1990, remains the city's sharpest club space for electronic music. Across those venues, the programming spans centuries more convincingly than almost anywhere else in Flanders.
