Few northern Swedish cities carry the pop music pedigree that Skellefteå does. The city was formally designated Popstad, or Pop City, in 2002, recognition of an indie wave in the late 1990s that produced internationally known acts including The Wannadies and Sahara Hotnights, both shaped by a municipal music school that was named the best in the country in 2001. That infrastructure still drives the scene today, with Mullberget serving as a central music factory offering 18 rooms for creation, recording studios, and a dedicated concert hall, while Sara kulturhus handles the larger concert and theatre productions. The Trästockfestivalen, organized by Kulturföreningen Mullberget and running since 1989, is Sweden's largest free festival, and the Summertime Skellefteå Music and Life Festival at Norrvalla has grown into one of northern Scandinavia's biggest events. The talent pipeline, the infrastructure, and the festivals make this city a serious live music destination.
