Wermland Opera
Wermland Opera in Karlstad, Sweden, operates out of three distinct venues: the Spinneriet, a converted spinning factory that has housed the institution since 1994; the historic Karlstad Theatre, a classified monument designed by Axel Johan Anderberg and completed in 1893; and Bageriet, a former Coop bakery renovated into a modern cultural space that won Karlstad's Building Preservation Award in 2025. Founded in 1975 as Musikteatern i Värmland and renamed in 2003, it is one of Sweden's six official opera institutions. The venue programs a broad spectrum of operas, musicals, and concerts, frequently staging Swedish and Nordic premieres alongside classic works. It maintains a permanent staff of 70, including five singers and a 35-member orchestra, and runs extensive youth programming with school performances and tours across Värmland. The Karlstad Theatre, noted for its elegant interior and excellent acoustics, has been a historical monument since 1985.
