Palacio de los Deportes
Opened in 1968 for the Olympic Games, the Palacio de los Deportes is a multi-purpose indoor arena in Mexico City distinguished by its striking copper-and-concrete dome, nicknamed the “Palacio de los mil soles” for the way it reflects sunlight. Designed by architects Félix Candela, Antonio Peyri, and Enrique Castañeda Tamborel, the venue’s parabolic and hyperbolic geometry gives it an exoskeleton-like appearance often compared to an armadillo. Its capacity varies by configuration, with reported figures around 20,000 to 26,000. The arena hosts a wide range of events, including concerts spanning rock, pop, regional Mexican, hip-hop, and electronic music, as well as basketball, indoor soccer, lucha libre, motocross, and expositions. A smaller pavilion within the complex accommodates additional shows and trade fairs. Despite initial acoustic challenges, the venue remains a key entertainment hub and an architectural icon of 20th-century Mexico.
