A city with a continuous musical identity stretching back to the ninth century, Istanbul has shaped Turkish classical music, incubated kanto at the close of the 19th century in its Pera and Galata quarters, and remains the primary production hub for Turkish pop today. That historical weight sits alongside a working contemporary infrastructure: Zorlu Performing Arts Center holds 2,200 seats on its main stage, Babylon Bomonti anchors the club-oriented live circuit, and Nardis Jazz Club near the Galata Tower pulls in local and international jazz acts consistently. The Istanbul Music Festival has run every June since 1973, and the Istanbul Jazz Festival, now in its fourth decade, covers jazz, funk, blues, and world music across two weeks each summer. Artists from Ajda Pekkan to the shoegaze band The Away Days, and heavy metal guitarist Hakan Utangaç, all trace their roots here.
