Sakari Conducts The Wind Ensemble
Conductor Petri Sakari, former principal conductor of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, leads the Orchestra's wind ensemble in an extremely diverse repertoire where everyone should be able to find something they like. A magnificent fanfare from Paul Dukas' ballet music sets the tone before Milhaud's cheeky and provocative music takes over. Stravinsky's music, dedicated to the memory of Claude Debussy, is a contemplative and solemn work that ends with a serene chorale.
English composer Ruth Gipps was exceptionally versatile and left behind a number of works, including five symphonies. As an oboist, she had an excellent knowledge of wind instruments, which is reflected in an exceptionally beautiful work for 10 wind players in which the sea and the beach play the main roles. The concert concludes with a powerful work for 24 wind players by one of the most well-known Finnish composers of recent years, Magnus Lindberg. In Gran Duo, woodwind and brass players collide, allowing each group's unique musical style to be fully enjoyed.
