On March 24, 1959, a band called Rhythm and Blues took the stage at Rudy Kot in Gdansk, an event widely regarded as the birth of modern rock music in Poland. That legacy runs deep: Gdansk later gave rise to Behemoth, the blackened death metal band formed here in 1991 and credited with establishing the Polish extreme metal underground, and has produced artists ranging from rock singer Agnieszka Chylinska to pianist and composer Hania Rani. The city hosts the Mystic Festival, Poland's largest metal event, alongside the prestigious early music festival Actus Humanus. For live shows on any given night, venues like the industrial B90 in the Shipyard district handle major rock and metal acts, while Protokultura, Drizzly Grizzly, and Lawendowa 8 sustain a committed underground circuit across punk, noise, and experimental sounds.
