The Buttermarket
Housed in a Grade II listed former canal warehouse built in 1835, The Buttermarket is Shrewsbury’s largest entertainment venue, with a capacity of 1,800 for general admission and club nights. Originally the terminal warehouse for the Norbury branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, the building later served as a railway warehouse before falling into disrepair and being saved from demolition by the Howard Street Conservation Trust. After extensive renovation around 1982, it became a nightclub and studio/theatre complex. In 2012, local entrepreneur Martin Monahan purchased the venue and invested up to £2 million in refurbishment. The venue spans three floors—The Cellars, Main Arena, and VIP Mezzanine—and features a rare 12-foot Wurlitzer organ. It hosts live concerts, club nights, comedy, banqueting, conferences, weddings, and sporting events, programming genres including house, drum and bass, hip-hop, funk, and live music. Its neo-classical columns and original arched cellars preserve its historical character, offering a city-nightlife atmosphere in the Shropshire town.
