Manchester Academy
Manchester Academy is a four-space live music complex on the University of Manchester campus, owned by the Students’ Union and operated by SJM Concerts. Academy 1, a purpose-built standalone hall, opened on October 18, 1990, while the other spaces—Academy 2, Academy 3, and Club Academy—occupy the original 1957 Students’ Union building and have older histories, with Academy 2 hosting jazz as early as 1963. The complex is architecturally distinctive for combining a 1950s union building with a modern concert hall, giving it a raw-industrial feel. Club Academy is notable for its intimate setup, often lacking a barrier between performer and audience. The venue programs a wide range of genres including rock, metal, pop, indie, punk, soul, and electronic music, and also hosts stand-up comedy, drag, and family-friendly events. It has earned Attitude Is Everything’s Silver Standard for accessibility and is considered a cornerstone of Manchester’s live music scene.
