Alexanders Live
Alexanders Live, an independent live music, arts, and comedy venue in Chester city centre, was founded in 1991 by Rod Cox and Pauline Thompson. Its inaugural performance was a comedy show by Bob Monkhouse on June 21, 1991. The venue is situated on Rufus Court, adjacent to the ancient Roman City Walls, which run along its beer garden—the largest in the city. Its design is inspired by a jazz cabaret or blues cellar bar in the American south, giving it a quirky, intimate ambiance. The venue hosts a diverse program of live music spanning jazz, blues, soul, roots, and rock, alongside regular tribute bands, local acts, and open mic nights. Comedy is a major pillar, with Friday night comedy events and a comedy club that holds the distinction of being the longest-running outside of London. Alexanders Live also presents independent theatre shows and festivals, and in summer it uses its large beer garden for outdoor courtyard gigs. The venue holds a wedding license and is available for private hire.
