1865
The 1865 is Southampton’s largest independent live music and events venue, housed in a former working men’s club that was originally built in the late 1960s as a rope depot. Owner Paul Hooper, whose rubber company was founded in 1865, converted the space into a music venue in 2013, preserving much of the building’s original character. The venue’s management previously ran the well-regarded Talking Heads, making this its operational successor. The 1865 features a d&b audiotechnik sound system, two fully-stocked bars, and a large mezzanine balcony with clear sightlines. Its flexible layout accommodates standing gigs, club nights, comedy, theatre, cabaret, and banqueting. The venue programs a wide range of genres including rock, indie, metal, electronic, blues, jazz, and folk, and also hosts club nights, comedy shows, theatre, and private functions. Accessibility is a priority, with a wheelchair-friendly floor and priority viewing positions. The 1865 is recognized for its sound quality, friendly staff, and reasonable drink prices, and it serves as a cultural anchor in Southampton’s live music landscape.
