Opera was born in Florence. The Camerata de' Bardi, a group of nobles, writers, and musicians who gathered at Palazzo Bardi in the 16th century, laid the groundwork for the form, and the city has been shaping musical history ever since, including Bartolomeo Cristofori's invention of the fortepiano around 1700. That legacy runs alongside a contemporary live scene with genuine range: Jazz Club Firenze pulls international artists into a classic club atmosphere, Firenze Rocks brings major rock acts to the Visarno Arena each June, and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival fills the city with opera, ballet, and orchestral concerts from late April through June. Local artists including singer-songwriter Marco Masini and rock band Litfiba, formed here in 1980, confirm that Florence produces music as well as it celebrates it.
