Manuel (de) Tavares (Portalegre, c. 1585-Cuenca, October 14, 1638) was a Portuguese composer who worked in Spain as a chapel master in the early Baroque period. Manuel Tavares was born around 1585 in the city of Portalegre, Portugal. His musical training was in the cathedral of his hometown with maestro António Ferro, as did Manuel Leitán de Avilés, who had a similar career. He married Ana Manuel and had a son named Nicolás Tavares de Olivera, who learned the art of music with his father.
