Giovanni Domenico del Giovane da Nola was one of the central figures of 16th-century Neapolitan music, active as both a church musician and a leading composer of villanelle, the earthy, lively, vernacular genre that Naples exported to the rest of Italy. Born in Nola around 1510. Served as maestro di cappella at Santa Maria la Nova in Naples, then later at the Cathedral of Nola. Published multiple books of villanelle, madrigals, and sacred works (notably his Lamentationes).
