Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini was born in Basel in 1971, where he studied German and Italian language and literature from 1990-97. He also studied composition with Rudolf Kelterborn at the Musikhochschule, Basel from 1994-97 and with Wolfgang Rihm in Karlsruhe from 1998-2000 as well as at the Royal Academy of Music, London. He has received numerous prizes including the Jakob Burckhardt Prize from the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Foundation, Basel in 1998
